Women Chefs & Restaurateurs Light Up Calgary
MRCA’s hometown is already the location of some powerhouse women chefs. The energy is sure to ramp up exponentially Oct 1 and 2 when Calgary plays host to a Women Chefs & Restaurateurs (WCR) Education Session.
The event kicks off Thursday night with the Famous Five Foundation Gala Dinner at Hotel Arts. The dinner will be an all female chef collaboration featuring a roster of top Alberta WCR Chefs Including:
- Wanda Ly of WinSport
- Lindsay Porter of El Cortez Cantina
- Judy Wood of Meez Fast Home Cuisine
- Andrea Harling of Made Foods
- Erin Pickering of Nicole Gourmet
- Natasha Schwarzer of Cococo Chocolatiers
The local crew will be joined by international guest chef Kathleen Blake of Orlando, Florida’s Rusty Spoon.
The evening’s host is San Francisco-based celebrity chef, Elizabeth Falkner, who will welcome to her table chefs Lynn Crawford and Lora Kirk of Ruby Watchco, Toronto, along with Amanda Cohen of NYC’s dirtcandy. The evening’s MC is Gwendolyn Richards, Calgary Herald columnist and food writer.
A partnership with the Alberta Culinary Tourism Alliance, the Gala is designed to raise funds for the Famous 5 Foundation’s program supporting education, leadership and empowerment for women and girls. Some of the proceeds from the evening will support an educational bursary for a female student to attend the culinary program at Calgary’s Southern Alberta Institute of technology.
The next day, October 2, there’s a full day program of education sessions with speakers covering a wide range of subjects, from sustainability to building your personal brand. The day wraps up with an after party at Container Bar, one of joints owned by our own Chef Cam D, which he bills as “beach hut, meets tiki bar meets back alley.” MRCA is sponsoring the event, with an apron for each of the speakers and a little something-something in the delegate swag bags.
